Netflix Addiction: Invasion of the Campbell

My brothers and sisters I have been treated with low budget gold! It’s a wonder that caught me off guard. It’s a tale of delightfulness and cheesy, cheap fun! You see, normally I witness some of the weirdest, awkward, boring, and sometimes wrong films. Some bring excitement, others shame. Some bring EPIC GLORY, while others leave a disastrous aftertaste. This one would leave a horrible aftertaste, as it offers all the right ingredients for a horribly bad experience. Oh, was I too soon to judge this masterpiece? If tales of people that can carry a film singlehandedly are true, this one is it. The tale of how Terminal Invasion was saved by one man and one man alone…BRUCE CAMPBELL.

At first it was just a typical low budget mess. My eyes were practically begging to be closed shut, away from the mess of cheap effects and poor acting, but then, whales and whalettes, Bruce came out and owned every second on air. I’m unsure in regards to the plot of this film, but apparently it’s about some foolish aliens attempting to kill Bruce and not friends. Who are we kidding; Bruce Campbell can take them easily. One thing to be aware of in this film: beware of vending machines…

If you are a fan of Sci-Fi films and of Bruce Campbell, experience this with open arms. If you do not enjoy the presence of a real MAN, sit it out and go watch my little pony. With that I take my leave whales. I shall commence rating from now on to explain movies that attempt to confuse my GLORY. I give this movie 3 out of 5 Shields, most given the Bruce ability to enhance any scene with smooth hilarious commentary. This is Dr. Sparta’s 1 out of 1 recommending any Bruce Campbell related media for any boredom or witty smooth one liner related problems.

Se reclutarán héroes para maratón de videojuegos, quienes jugarán

para recaudar fondos a beneficio de la Fundación de Niños San Jorge

El Puerto Rico Comic Con (PRCC), el principal evento de cultura popular y entretenimiento en la región, expande su misión a través de una alianza con Extra Life Puerto Rico, entidad sin fines de lucro cuyo objetivo es la recaudación de fondos destinados a la Fundación de Niños San Jorge.

Durante el PRCC, a celebrarse el 24 y 25 de mayo en el Centro de Convenciones, Extra Life estará reclutando “gamers” para que participen de un maratón internacional de videojuegos el 25 octubre; todo dinero levantado durante el maratón es a beneficio de la Fundación de Niños San Jorge, organización sin fines de lucro dedicada a ayudar a niños y niñas con malformaciones físicas y a pacientes pediátricos de oncología y hematología.

Según Ricardo Carrión, productor ejecutivo del Puerto Rico Comic Con, “es un orgullo establecer esta relación con Extra Life Puerto Rico y la Fundación de Niños San Jorge porque permite que nuestros seguidores y el público general conozcan la importante labor de estas organizaciones y de una vez participar de ella. El entretenimiento en general y los videojuegos en específico son segmentos muy populares en la Isla, y con esta alianza el Puerto Rico Comic Con añade una nueva dimensión a lo que es la diversión – jugar por una causa noble”.

Por su parte, Carmen Prieto, directora ejecutiva de Fundación de Niños San Jorge, mantuvo que “el Puerto Rico Comic Con es el foro ideal para impulsar el concepto de Extra Life Puerto Rico. Allí se encuentra la mayor concentración de “gamers”, “cosplayers”, coleccionistas de cómics y aficionados de la cultura popular. Por ende, tenemos grandes expectativas en términos de reclutar jugadores individuales y equipos para el maratón mundial que está pautado para el 25 de octubre, además de recaudación de fondos en el Comic Con mediante la venta camisetas, premiums, rifas y otros”.

Carrión y Juan Soto, coordinador de la Fundación, coincidieron en expresar que toda persona que participe de Extra Life tiene la oportunidad de ser un verdadero héroe, ya que estará jugando a beneficio de los miles de pacientes pediátricos que la Fundación de Niños San Jorge atiende.

Extra Life se fundó en 2008 en el Texas Children’s Hospital y forma parte de la organización nacional Children’s Miracle Network. Durante los pasados cuatro años consecutivos, Extra Life Puerto Rico ha apoyado el Children’s Miracle Network en su gestión de recaudación de fondos. Todos los fondos que se recauden por “gamers de patio” se quedan en Puerto Rico y son distribuidos por la Fundación de Niños San Jorge. El año pasado levantó más de $6,100 para los niños de Puerto Rico y el recaudo total en el maratón fue de más de 4 millones de dólares para salvar a los niños de todo Estados Unidos, Canada y Puerto Rico.

La próxima edición del Puerto Rico Comic Con ocupará más de 120 mil pies cuadrados de espacio, la mayor cantidad en su historia. Fiel a su legado de brindar una experiencia “pop culture” sin igual, PRCC 2014 contará con la participación de importantes exponentes de la industria, incluyendo talento local e internacional (actores de Hollywood, artistas de cómics, diseñadores de videojuegos, celebridades, etc.) que llegan para interactuar con sus fans y también presentar sus nuevas propuestas.

Temper recommends Welcome to Night Vale

      In the small desert town of Night Vale, anything and everything is possible. Every conspiracy is true, while nature behaves in very odd ways. It’s a place where science and magic seem indistinguishable from each other. But the residents of Night Vale don’t seem to mind very much, despite being watched over by both a totalitarian police force and a vague yet menacing government agency. That is, if their community radio program is to be believed.

       


   Welcome to Night Vale is a podcast presented as the live recordings of a public radio show airing in the fictional desert town of Night Vale. The show was created by Joseph Fink and Jeffrey Cranor and airs on the 1^st and 15^th of every month (delays not withstanding). The fictional show stars host Cecil, voiced by Cecil Baldwin, who doles out news and advertisements to the audience of Night Vale. Each episode also contains a “weather report” showcasing a different independent musical act. Along with the weather, the show has intro, outro, and background music by musician and composer Disparition.

       When I first heard of Welcome to Night Vale, from our very own Houdini, I was doing my yearly “read everything H.P. Lovecraft ever wrote”. He described the show to me as a mix of Twilight Zone meets Lovecraft, with a little bit of Stephen King thrown in. I was so surprised he hadn’t mentioned Night Vale to me before that I actually shook him. Needless to say, I went home and subscribed, and have been listening religiously ever since.

                 
        Night Vale has been running for a relatively short time, only recently releasing its 43^rd episode. Despite that, the podcast has garnered the attention of thousands of listeners, reaching the top ten podcasts list on iTunes in July 2013. Hundreds of fan blogs are out there, fan art is plentiful, and the mystery and horror aspects of the show have created many fan theories and side stories. The show is so popular that it even prompted its creators to open live show tours, as well as pen a novel to explore parts of Night Vale that haven't been able to get proper exposition with the podcast. The fandom has a sort of hive mind that accepts pretty much anything the creators’ offer, likely because of the audio-only nature of the show. Fans have a more or less universal acceptance of what titular characters look like and of the general layout of the town, among other things.  

         Welcome to Night Vale is currently my favorite podcast. I wholeheartedly recommend to anyone who will listen to me gush about how amazing it is.  Although, is it really that good, or am I just under the control of the Sherriff’s Secre-

           “Oh how nice of him to write about us. It really is too bad the Secret Police took him. I’ll just correct his grammar until he gets back. You won’t tell, right?”
